Brand/Model Summary

When Porsche launched the 928 in 1977, it wasn't meant to be another sports car - it was meant to be the car, engineered to eventually replace the 911 as the company's flagship grand tourer. Porsche broke with every convention that had defined the brand: in place of an air-cooled flat-six hung out behind the rear axle, the 928 introduced a front-mounted, water-cooled V8 driving the rear wheels through a rear transaxle, delivering near-perfect weight distribution and a wholly different character - a fast, refined, continent-crushing GT.

The gamble earned the 928 a distinction no other sports car holds to this day: it remains the first and only sports car ever named European Car of the Year. Its clean, timeless shape - pop-up headlamps, flowing fastback, body-colored bumpers years ahead of their time - still looks like it arrived from the future. The earliest cars, built in the model's debut years, are the ones collectors now chase hardest: they represent the purest realization of the original design, and survivors in honest, unmolested condition are growing scarce. Values for the best early examples have climbed steadily, and the market has only begun to recognize what these first cars truly are.

Vehicle Summary

This is chassis #475 - one of the first 500 Porsche 928s ever produced - an early-build 1978 model in coveted European specification, and a genuine piece of the model's founding history. Cars this early, this original, and this well-documented almost never come to market.

Delivered new in late 1977 and accompanied by its Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, it is powered by the M28/01 4.5-liter V8 making 177 kW (240 PS) in full Euro tune - considerably stronger than the emissions-restricted U.S. cars of the same year - paired with the balance and long-legged refinement that made the 928 a landmark grand tourer. It has covered just ~47,000 miles (75,300 km) from new, a remarkably low figure for a car approaching fifty years old and backed by documentation.

Crucially, this car has been kept true to itself. Its recent, extensively invoiced restoration was carried out to original specification throughout - comprehensively servicing the engine, driveline, suspension, brakes, and wheels, and finishing the car with a bare-body respray in its original Mocha Brown over a faithfully restored original Mint Green Pasha interior. No color changes, no departures from how Porsche built it - just a correct, honest, first-500 928 returned to its best. It rides on correct 16" "phone dial" wheels on Michelin Pilot Exalto tires and has passed Spanish ITV inspection.

For the collector, the appeal is rare to find in one car: exceptional provenance, verified early production, genuine low mileage, complete documentation from factory certificate to service invoices, and total originality of color and trim. This is not a driver to be used up - it's a foundational, appreciating example of one of Porsche's most important designs, ready for the finest collection, concours lawn, or a marque event where its story speaks for itself.

Ownership History

This 1978 Porsche 928 Coupé (VIN 9288100475) was delivered new in late 1977 as a European-specification car, finished in code 451 Mocha Brown over a Mint Green Pasha interior, and optioned from the factory with a stronger battery, heated passenger-side mirror, electric antenna, tinted glass, and air conditioning - all documented on its accompanying Porsche Certificate of Authenticity.

The car spent its life in Spain, most recently under long-term private ownership in Barcelona, where it received an extensive, well-documented restoration by a marque specialist. Completed under a single order (O.R. 025735) with the car in the shop from late 2021, the work totaled over €38,000 and touched nearly every system: a comprehensive engine service (full timing-belt set, ignition harness and wiring, injectors, electric fuel pump, coil, plugs), a rebuilt clutch and hydraulics, cooling-system overhaul, refreshed suspension, brakes, and a new set of 16" "phone dial" wheels on Michelin Pilot Exalto tires. Cosmetically, the car was finished with a bare-body respray in its original Mocha Brown and a full retrim in its original Mint Green Pasha, keeping the car entirely correct to factory specification, along with new headlights, tail lamp, door seals and glass channels, badging, and a period-correct Porsche radio.

In 2023, the car passed Spanish ITV (roadworthiness) inspection following further mechanical sorting at Juliá 911 in Montgat, including new front springs and a full alignment, headlight and antenna replacement, and gearbox linkage work (Factura 230528).

The car has been imported into the United States, with titling and registration currently in progress and expected to be completed within the next month. It comes with its original Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, Spanish service invoices, and full import documentation on file.
