Brand/Model Summary

"The E39 M5 is the car by which every M5 since has been measured - and the one no successor has fully surpassed."

The E39 M5 is the one nearly everybody agrees on. Built from 1998 to 2003, with its S62 V8 hand-assembled at BMW M’s Garching works, it took that engine — 4.9 liters, quad-cam, eight individual throttle bodies, double-VANOS, and a genuine appetite for revs — and put 394 horsepower into a body that gave almost nothing away. No wing. No flared arches. A deeper front valance, quad pipes, Style 65 wheels, and that was the whole argument. It was offered one way only: six-speed manual, rear-wheel drive. No automatic was ever built.

What it did to the category is settled history now. Before the E39, a fast sedan was a compromise; after it, the super-sedan was a genre, and everything since has been measured against it. It is also the last M5 offered solely with a conventional manual gearbox — SMG and everything that followed arrived with the E60. Hydraulic steering, a naturally aspirated V8, and a real gearlever. That is why the generation has stopped depreciating and started appreciating..

Vehicle Summary

Which is exactly why this one is worth your attention. A 155,000-mile S62 is normally a question mark. This one is an answer. Under the current owner — an engineer-minded enthusiast who kept a line-item ledger of every part number, vendor, brand, mileage, and dollar — this car has absorbed $18,867 in documented service and parts, nearly all of it inside the last ~6,000 miles. Almost every known S62 failure point has been pre-empted rather than deferred, and the receipts are in the file to prove it.

The cooling system — the thing that quietly ends most S62s — has been renewed rather than nursed: Mahle radiator, Mahle thermostat with O-rings and temperature sensor, new fan clutch, and a full Zerex G48 flush. VANOS, the signature E39 fault, was sent to DrVanos in 2025 for a solenoid rebuild and solenoid board replacement, with both exhaust camshaft position sensors replaced alongside. The timing and oiling side has had the upper chain guide, lower chain tensioner, oil-pump chain tensioner, and a fresh lower oil pan and gasket. Ignition and fueling were done in full: eight Dinan coilpacks, NGK plugs, two Bosch MAFs, fuel filter, crankcase vent and oil separators, and EVAP purge valve.

Underneath, it is effectively a new chassis. Koni shocks front and rear went in with a complete arm refresh — front control arms, tension arms, center tie rod and ends, rear guide rods, rear upper control arms, and front and rear sway links — followed by a four-wheel alignment, all through Haute Motorworks. The driveline received a rebuilt driveshaft from DSI with a new giubo, front and rear differential bushings and a full diff service, transmission mounts, and a shift-arm bushing. Brakes are Zimmermann rotors and pads on ECS stainless lines, and the entire power-steering reservoir and line set was replaced.

The part that closes the argument is the oil. A Blackstone Laboratories analysis dated February 2026 is on file, and it addresses the one thing every S62 buyer actually fears. Rod bearing wear metals came back at lead 1 against a universal average of 3, with iron at 4 against an average of 11 and copper at 3 against 6. Blackstone's own comment: the bearing metal "is in great shape here so we don't suspect any trouble... This engine is wearing well all around." The oil held its 10W-60 viscosity with no fuel, coolant, or dirt contamination. Peake scans have been logged since 2020, and the earlier misfire history was chased to root cause — coilpacks in 2023, exhaust CPS and VANOS solenoids in 2025 — and resolved, with the most recent scans clear.

Cosmetically, the car reads as a well-kept driver rather than a concours restoration, and it has been treated with the same seriousness as the mechanicals. The front and rear bumpers, mirrors, and door handles were repainted in 2021, paintless dent repair followed in 2022, and a full paint correction in 2023. The factory Style 65 wheels were professionally refinished in a darker shade with new OEM center caps. Details throughout are enthusiast-grade and deliberate: LaminX-tinted fog lamps, blue mirror glass, replacement DEPO headlight lenses, M5 door sills, silver interior trim, a 16:9 MK4 navigation upgrade, E38 lighted interior door handles, Bimmian aluminum shift knob and handbrake handle, a Euro armrest with custom stitching, and an Alcantara headliner.

The interior is the one place this car deliberately departs from factory spec. In 2022 the seats were fully reupholstered in Cobalt Red leather over black by a dedicated upholstery shop, with the steering wheel, shift boot, handbrake boot, and armrest restitched to match. It is well executed and it photographs beautifully, but it is a taste item and it is not original specification. A buyer looking for a factory-correct black interior should know that going in.

Ownership History

Disclosed Items

Sold as-is. In keeping with how we do this, here is everything we would want to know if we were the buyer:

  • Tires. The Kumho PS31 set was fitted in May 2021. Tread may remain serviceable, but the set is five years old and should be budgeted for regardless of appearance.

  • Emissions monitors coded out. Secondary air and catalyst-efficiency monitors were coded out in 2020–2021 and remain so. This is disclosed plainly; buyers in emissions-testing jurisdictions should factor it in.

  • Interior rear window trim missing but easily replaced

  • Rear parking sensors are non-operational

  • Paint has chips consistent with age.

  • Custom interior. The Cobalt Red reupholstery is non-original. Presented as a feature, disclosed as a modification.

  • Odometer exempt. The Texas title was issued odometer-exempt, standard for a vehicle of this age. Mileage is supported by a continuous, dated service ledger rather than by the title.

  • Owner-performed work. A meaningful share of the maintenance was performed by the owner, using OEM and premium-tier parts documented by part number. Specialist work was correctly farmed out — DrVanos for VANOS, DSI for the driveshaft, Haute Motorworks for suspension and alignment, BavTek for the cluster. We regard the records as unusually strong; a buyer should still budget for a pre-purchase inspection, and we welcome one.

  • Misfire code history. Historical misfire codes appear in the Peake log. Each was traced and addressed; the most recent scans are clear. The full log is included so a buyer can read the arc themselves.

Documentation & Provenance

The car comes with a complete, dated, line-item service ledger covering the current ownership, the Blackstone oil analysis, the full Peake diagnostic log, and a full set of owner's manuals and booklets. Provenance is traceable back through prior owners to 2005, with dealer records from BMW Gallery of Norwood at 67,875 and 73,317 miles in 2005 and 84,103 miles in 2006, and Phoenix Motor Works work at 98,960 through 101,748 miles in 2010. Recorded prior-owner service continues through 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2019.

Title is a Texas Certificate of Title, clean, with no liens recorded. As is standard for a vehicle of this age, the title was issued odometer-exempt; the mileage story here rests on a continuous dated service record rather than on the title itself, and that record is unusually complete.
