The M5 arrived for 1999 as the fourth generation of BMW's definitive performance sedan, and it brought with it the S62: a hand-assembled, 4.9-liter naturally aspirated V8 producing 394 horsepower at 6,600 rpm. The engine was not turbocharged, not supercharged - just displacement, compression, and mechanical intention, developed from the V8 program behind the E39 540i and taken considerably further by M GmbH. It revs freely, makes its power at the top of the band, and requires nothing electronic to deliver it.
The E39 was also the last M5 offered exclusively with a manual transmission - a six-speed, because no alternative was provided. BMW introduced the SMG in the E60 that followed, and something was permanently traded away. Driving an E39 M5 today is a reminder of what that something was.

Blackstone oil analysis (02/2026) and a Peake scan log going back to 2020 are on file.
The interior has been thoughtfully refreshed: seats reupholstered with red inserts, new headliner, and the factory wood trim swapped for silver - original wood trim included with the sale for a buyer who prefers it stock.
Disclosed: Minor paint imperfections consistent with age and use are present and will be documented in full photography. Rear parking sensors are currently inoperative.
